JPEG File Format
One of the most readily used file formats on the web and for good reasons too. It is a pixel-oriented file that has essential function of displaying your logo on electronic screens including Your Website, Social Media Pages, Email Signatures, etc. Since it is one of the early file formats it has certain baggage with it. Firstly the artwork would always have a background-bounding box; secondly the color projection is fairly accurate but colors such as orange and red tends to misbehave due to image compression. Another area of caution is that this format can be used to reproduce and can only be used at 100% size or less to avoid loss of quality.
PNG File Format:
The PNG file format is another pixel-based format that basically succeeds and supersedes the JPG format. Similar to JPG its main use is when your logo/ artwork needs to be visible on a website, email signature, ad campaign and etc. This format boasts the transparent clear background that lacked in JPG. It also features ‘lossless’ image resolution, meaning there is no image degradation, blending of colors or etc. There are a few platforms and software that don’t fully support PNG’s function of transparent background but this is considered as the universal standard for high-quality logo images.
PDF File Format:
We have all used PDF file format mainly for documents and have kind of grown into what this file format is capable of. The most distinct advantage of this format is that you can view Hi-Res, vector-based version of your logo without the need of professional design software. This can also be used as a source file and many designers prefer to share just PDF format with their clients. The file is easily accessible and viewable on any operating system including mobile and tablet OS that makes it the preferred option. Also, similar to EPS and AI file type, it also features unlimited resolution!
PSD File Format:
Similar to AI file format, PSD file format is the proprietary file of Adobe Photoshop, which is basically a source file for pixel-based images. That said, this format has its high points as well as certain limitations. For one it requires you to use Photoshop or similar software to view, edit and reproduce. Other limitations are more related to editing features as the artwork in this format is developed on layer basis (individual parts of the logo are placed on top of the other). It is useful when you want to add some additional effects such as lens, drop shadow, flare, refocus and etc. Not having the artwork in this format doesn’t hurt as it can always be reproduced from the EPS file by your designer but hey! That’s what we are her for…
EPS File Format:
EPS file extension is the Mother-ship (source file) from which any and all other relevant file types can be created. It is a vector based source file that you may not use it yourself as it requires a professional software to be used, but would readily share with the one handling your online and offline printing. The advantage with this file format is that it can reproduce multiple files at any size without loss of quality in the artwork. It is suggested that you not only keep it safe but preferably make a backup copy as well.
Ai File Format:
It is another vector based source file that has the benefit of unlimited resolution without the loss of quality but such file type has become outmoded due to its limitations. You would require Adobe Illustrator, a proprietary software to use this file format and the software version would have to be at least the same version or higher. Thus this particular file format is now delivered to clients simply as a matter of course.
